Atlantic Track, through its MRT Track
and Services joint venture with Thyssen Krupp GFT Gleistechnik,
has recently begun testing of a new design Y Steel tie for heavy
load applications specifically for the North American rail market.
The second phase of testing is currently taking place at the TTCI
test track in Pueblo Colorado.
The
innovative design provides high lateral load resistance to transverse
displacement. The ties are 100% recyclable, allow for complete
electrical insulation, have a 70-year life expectancy and require
50% fewer ties per track mile, 30% less ballast and has 30% less
fastening points. Testing will be completed later this year.
MRT project engineer Thomas Schlender
stated, "the last few years we have been working on a modified
design of Thyssen Krupp's Y steel tie for the US market. We have
done modeling at the University of Munich and are excited to see
how these ties preform under the heavy loads required by the US
railroads. These ties have been very successful in Europe, and
we believe that with the modifications we have made, the ties
will provide excellent benefits for our North American customers."
